How does the world drink coffee?

Expresso, hazelnut or cream, would you like a cup of coffee? But do you know that there are many ways to enjoy good coffee around the world? From preparation rituals to original recipes, follow us on this little coffee tasting world tour.

Coffee break: When does the world drink coffee?

From your big morning bowl to an end-of-meal espresso, you never miss your coffee. In many countries too, coffee breaks break up the day.

In Portugal, coffee is so popular that it is drunk as a very concentrated aperitif, accompanied by bite-sized savoury treats. They lovingly call their espresso “bica” from the acronym meaning “drink this with sugar”. Black coffee lovers, consider yourself warned! In Cuba, small, sweet, concentrated coffees are drunk in the form of “buchitos” (sips) throughout the day.

While in Turkey, coffee not only breaks up the day but also tells your future. You only have to read the traces left by the coffee grounds. A hint: if you see parallel lines from the bottom to the edge of the cup, that means that a journey is forthcoming, so you do well to read this article!

Tradition: How does the world store its coffee?

In the cupboard or fridge, you have your habits when it comes to keeping your coffee. On the islands, they scent their beans.

In Tahiti, coffee is kept with a vanilla bean whose subtle aroma is released during brewing. In Guadeloupe, old rum and brown sugar are added to vanilla to macerate the beans. Tempting, isn’t it? Indonesians make “Kopi Luwak” coffee from the harvested droppings of small mammals called civets (yes, yes!) Needless to say, it has an unusual aroma. A short anecdote, during colonization,

Indonesians were not permitted to consume cultivated coffee, so they discovered this alternative method, which has become a global success.

Know-how: The different ways coffee is made around the world

The time for tasting has arrived, take out your cup, mug or bowl, as you usually do. To turn beans into nectar, each country has its own way of doing things.

In the United States, Americano coffee is a shot of espresso diluted with boiled water, producing a very light, long coffee. Ritual for some, “sock juice” for others: it’s up to you!

If you are passionate about coffee, cross the earth to its birthplace, Ethiopia. There you will see a real ceremony, grains are crushed with a pestle and hot water poured over them three times before enjoying. The taste is unparalleled.

Gourmandize, the best recipes to enjoy your coffee

Are you a total fan of cappuccino and Viennese coffee? Milk and sugar are not the only elements that go with coffee.

Blending in some alcohol means many original recipes. Is Irish Coffee, that famous marriage of whiskey and cream, already familiar to you? But where you aware that on Reunion Island, they like to add a touch of aged rum to iced coffee? Choose your vintage! Spices may too be combined with coffee. Mexico uses cinnamon to create “olla” coffee, and pepper and cloves in Morocco to make “kawa”.

And finally, for an extra-special recipe that may remind you of your grandmother’s “pudding”, bet on Swedish coffee that has cubes of Finnish cheese at the bottom of each cup, to be enjoyed with a spoon after, of course. Addictive.
