What is specialty coffee?

A popular buzzword, specialty coffee is a recent trend in the world of coffee, which aims to bring coffee beans in to the upscale market. Far from the coffee industry's quality standards, specialty coffee is radically different in its approach to quality, society and the environment. A specialty coffee is defined by 4 main criteria:

• It must exceed 80 points (in accordance with the Specialty Coffee Association's guidelines).
• Have guaranteed traceability
• Be free from major defects
• Ensure superior quality throughout the coffee processing chain: cultivation, drying, roasting, etc

Why drink specialty coffee?

A specialty coffee is one of incredible aromatic richness, one that can easily be compared to the wine industry’s grand cru label. Today, industrial coffee is made from low-quality beans and roasted very dark to hide defects. The result is a burnt coffee with an unpleasant and standardised taste. But coffee is a fruit, and specialty coffee is trying to restore its nobility. In addition, specialty coffee makes it possible to pay farmers a proper wage so they can make a living from their work. This concept is quite the opposite of industrial coffee, which transfers most of the margin to the manufacturer. In addition, as part of our quest for quality, we don’t distribute capsules as we believe they have too big of an environmental impact.

Drinking specialty coffee also has an environmental benefit. Since we give precedence to producers who target quality over quantity, producing countries no longer maximise their yield, but seek to develop the quality of their beans over the long term. Biodiversity is promoted instead of coffee fruit, translating in to fewer coffee trees per square meter.
